The Village of Sussex maintains a "Small Town" atmosphere that highlights the historic roots of the village, and fosters a quality of life that includes an overall spirit of friendliness, availability of cultural and recreational opportunities.
The "small town" charm of Sussex is shown in the historic buildings, as well as in the parks, hiking, biking, and skiing trails. Sussex Village Park, with its sports fields, open spaces, and summer activities, is a charming place to embark on the Bugline Trail. Trains once hauled Lannon Stone from the deep limestone pits which still operate today. A look down into the quarries from the trail is an impressive sight. Dense woods near the trail often hide the fact that much of the trail is through suburbs.
The Town of Lisbon is intimately tied to the surrounding communities of Sussex, Merton, Pewaukee and Hartland. These communities currently provide commercial and social destinations for the residents of Lisbon as Lisbon is 90% residential. The residents can also enjoy the amenities offered by a large metropolitan area with the City of Milwaukee being a 30 minute drive.
To this day the charm of Lisbon lies in its rural landscape with rolling hills, old growth woodlands and scenic country roads. The Town is currently working on a land use plan that will enable Lisbon to keep its rural landscape and still accommodate its growing population.
